Animals & Wildlife in Marakele National Park
Marakele is home to the big five
Marakele has the major wildlife attraction you can expect to find at other National parks, including the Big five. The park has introduced the ``Thuli Elephants`` into the National park in 2009 and more recently a herd of 15 buffalo. There are about 130 elephants in the park in total, but they tend to stick to the inaccessible northern area of the park. There is a good chance of finding white rhino but, otherwise, sightings of major attractions such as Cape Vultures, Giraffe's, Antelope and Lions are spotted frequently. Marakele's appeal lies both in the wide variety of wildlife species and untouched natural scenery.
Wildlife Highlights
The park host more than 16 antelope species due to its variety of habitats. Some of the specials sightings include reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, eland, tsessebe and the stately sable antelope. Kudu with spiral horns have also been spotted on rare occasions. A night drive offers a chance to see the elusive aardwolf and aardvark.
Best time for Wildlife viewing
The best time of year to visit the Marakele National park to view wildlife is best scheduled during the Dry season. At this time of year, water holes for the animals in the bush dissipates leaving animals to search for other available water sources. These sources of water are great for spotting wildlife. The Dry season occurs from May to September.
